Do fancy it, back packing
I asked each b&b person the best months up around the route & they all said late April or all of May (based on the past 3 yrs).
Although camping would be great & there are millions of places to just stop & plonk a tent, if the weather turns tho it will be most miserable & like Jules said about putting wet kit back on to sit in it for several hours certainly won't be fun.
I'm not saying that there is no fuel for 140 miles as that tended to be their range to play it safe, but if you didn't get fuel in a place or 2 on the 450 due to the station being closed or unattended pumps only dispensing diesel you'd be balls'd, I'd say you'd have to carry a minimum of 5ltrs based on a 70 mile range of your tank (& I think that's being generous)
or carry a syphon pipe
