£2000 would be plenty to get back in to it, What you after a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

If its£2k,
its a Gasgas for a 2 stroke,
Yamaha Wr250 for a 4 stroke, plenty of power in the 250 and lighter than a 450, not too many people riding 450's out these days, they're heavy picking up, but not if u can stay on !!! a lot have come off 450's over to 300 2 stroke...
The Gassers are a calmer 2 stroke than the ktm's and maintenance wise not far from a Jap bike.........
I'm on my 3rd 300 Gasser, the plastics look shit in 5 minutes but the rest is all good....
Your height is a factor also, if your vertically challenged (like me) the Gassers fit the bill for me.

I just bought a brand new 450 skippy and it is awesome as long as i think about planning my woods ride, but you are right after my first ride Sunday i can agree a 250 is definitely plenty of oomph, my bike obly comes in to its own on long open trails, not for everyone for sure ,

I do know for an 05 250 gasser that some one would part with. He hasn't ridden it for years. Got to many others including a 2014!
