Bit down to personal preference and buget really,  but would suggest you don't go mental and buy a mega powerful old money pit  of a competition bike
250's are plenty for trail riding and Jap one's eg. XR's and TTR's ideal

What you really need is a tidy CRF 230 at sensible money (and I might just know where one is)  lol!

I agree to a point , but if you want the bigger bikes later on you will know yourself if you want one , but the lads are right , start with something nice , able and not too powerful and move up only if you wqnt to, i have gone from 200 2t up to 450 4t but that is after nearly 15 years of riding and still find i have too much power very often , nice to have it tho , but that is a personal choice

Will have a lovely 300 exc for sale in a couple of weeks if your interested 2011 model  2 stroke
If you done a bit before youll soon be upto speed and if you buy a 4banger 250 youll be looking for more power, my suggestion is buy a bike thats got plenty of go and easy to ride eg 250 or 300 stroker AND cheap to mantain especially if you manage to get one with a fully rebuilt engine new steering head bearings wheel bearings brake pads chain and sprockets and quite a few other bits n bobs  cheers

I agree with Gary, small four stroke that will get you home just add petrol. if you are doing the trails ideal. I use mine for work and L.D.Ts.
