We both use the side.
I tried the top, but only ever filmed the floor from there

Drill 2 little holes on underside of mount , you can then thread through a bit of wire , I use bag ties , tie it off , then you can thread the other end into one of the eyes on the camera bit , and job done . I had mine pop out once after hitting a tree , so this would just make it dangle until you pulled over . You have to use quite thin wire so not to get in the way of the camera bit when it pushes into the mount .
