As a mature rider who can at least spell Merv , i'd discount anything 2 stroke as you are neither young or a complete retard . A tidy KTM 350 EXC will do everything you want , or a 450 if you want a bit more torque or are a massive bloater

Re: Just joined
Hi and welcome
Something with the highest airbox possibly living that close to Strata Florida
I too am 'getting on a bit' as this lot enjoy constantly reminding me, and my last 3 bikes have been 250 four stroke which (too me) have been great for trail riding, and even the odd enduro!
But am obviously talking bollocks (again according to this lot ) as what you obviously need is a KTM 450, and if it's a bit slow you can put a go faster exhaust on and swap loads of parts for even lighter and even more fragile cheesy orange bits that KTM will happily flog you

You've always liked the 250's Shock, and you get on with them well!
Good size of bike to enjoy yourself on, not so likely to flip it...
Not sure about a KTM 300 mind. Haha

Re: Just joined
Thing is with the 450 owners in ere there's literally 1 maybe 2ata push on ere that CAN ride em and the rest THINK they can ride em so best avoided I wouldn't even bother with a 350. If your new to it get a 250 4t if you ain't new to it seriously consider a 2t they are a lot more fun to ride and need a lot more rider input to get the best out of em but who am I anyway ........... oh and hello by the way I got quite a bit of family around your way

Re: Just joined
Thanks for the welcome and all the replies. I am not a complete novice, had five years moto-cross and dabbled with trials and speedway. Then moved to grass track for ten years resulting in a top ten finish and an international licence. Best days of my life. Will get a bike sorted and take it from there, prefer four strokes. Anyone had experience of a Yamaha Serow? Cheers, Merv.
