ktm 300 to husaberg 501 experiences
So I have now put a couple of tanks through my 'new to me' 2004 husaberg 501. Last bike was a 2008 ktm 300. Here are some of my thoughts about moving from a violent 2 banger to a violent 4 banger!
Startiby
ktm 300- soooooo easy 1-2 kicks job done
Berg 501- need a wall to kick it, elec start nice till one of your kids fiddles with the idle screw and knocks everything out of sync Then spend hours cursing 4 strokes Untill you realise and set it up again, then all's good.
Riding
Ktm300- stressful till you get used to the power band. loads of gear changes. Either to much power in the band or nothing at all. Makes it fun but hard work. Good at chugging up slippery stuff with a vforce 4 reed block
Berg 501- less stressful, power is so linear it is really predictable. So easy to lift and hold the front wheel wherever you want it. Don't have to plan hill climbs, goes up anything in 3rd! Breaks traction sooooo easily, which is fun right now. Prob be a pain up somewhere like clutch fryers. The 501 is a bit of a beast though, its a bit like the 300 in the power band permanently, makes it as fun as the ktm in my Opinion
fixing
ktm300- seized engine to working again for £110 and 5 hrs work a child could do. Front pipes cost between £150-£250. they get bashed a lot. Sometimes welding sorts it, often not.
berg 501- scares me prob ££££
Overall-
I wish the husaberg was as easy to start as the 300. I prefer how the husaberg delivers its power, but do worry about being in the middle of no where with a dead battery and no tree/wall to lean against to kick. Also worry about top end rebuild. Never need to on the ktm.
There is next to no weight difference between them, which is quite an achievement for the berg.
They both vibrate as much as each other!
I'll update as I go along.
