Newbie advice and hello
Hi
I have just registered on the forum.
Visited the Bike Show at the NEC earlier today, looking at trail bikes to get a better idea of venturing off road.
Never ridden off road motorbikes before, although I used to ride off road mountain bikes all over the Welsh trail centres.
Looked at getting an older Honda XR400 but these bikes have had quite a bit of use over the years and I think that buying one just might be more trouble than its worth.
4 stroke is probably the bike for me , as I can't get my head around revving the thing to death and back.
KTM had alot of 4 strokes , 250 / 300 , but looking at the service intervals and type of intensive maintenance - well it seems a tad overkill for the type of usage I'll put the bike through.
Was well impressed with the CCM 450 at the show.
Would like to get a bike and join in the fun ( I'm local in Neath) - but need a little advide etc.
Regards
D

Bit flexible really, but I also don't have any off road gear. Could say no gear and no idea at the moment :-)
Would need helmet ( for off road) , jacket, pants, boots.
My road bike is an FJR1300, so I'm ok riding something.
£4000 ish

Hello
You can get a tidy wr 250 or crf 250 and all the gear for that , you could get fully kitted out for about 250-300 quid or even less with budget gear which is plenty good enough to begin with check out fleabay
Theres a few tramps on ere who get fully kitted out for the price of a knee trembler with the local lady of the night

Starting off with a 450,,,, best of luck with that mate, I made the mistake thinking coz I ride blades, blackbirds, R1's, etc..etc.. ktm 530 would be ok, big engine less maintanance, turned out to be a pain, service schedule wasnt the problem but a rebuild is a small morgage, besides I didnt ride it I wrestled it, way to much, just bought 300 2 stroke, easy maintanance & when rebuild time comes im looking at half the cost of a 4 stroke, or less, I think the service is every 10 hours or so im told, I dont know, im still waiting for my owners pack from mounters ktm in Pontypridd, fooking useless, take ya money & thats the end of that, anyway.....hi.

Re: Newbie advice and hello
I've had the same experience with the 4 vs 2 stroke..
first bike was a 250 4 stroke and I was forever working on it, replaced everything basically in 6 months ownership (this may not be normal, i dont know)
eventually I ended up with a 300 2 stroke and aside from the usual stuff like wheel bearings, no issues... a piston kit is about £130
having said that, there are bikes around like the stalwart DRZ400 which seems to go forever on tractor oil and a bit of 2 star...
