Yup, a H&H would be a good 'in' for your 1st event.

Make sure your bike is running properly and reliably (doesn't really matter what state it's in cosmetically... struggled to get my head around that, coming from MX), and best bit of advice I was given... take it steady - you have to go slow/steady, to go fast, if you know what I mean!?

It's the polar opposite to MX... if you blast away like a tit from the off, you will probably fall off and drown in a river... unless you're David Knight, Tom Sagar, etc.

Good luck, enjoy and let us know what one you're doing.

I would recommend taking your time and not trying to ride outside of your comfort zone as this will be much more tiring and sooner or later you'll make a mistake that costs you much more time than the few seconds that you have gained. Don't take the bull at a gate option, ther are times when just stopping and looking at an obstacle to make sure you take the least energy zapping option, i.e bogs and hill climbs. Many riders overtake me and I pass lots back when they are picking their bike up after falling.
have a good breakfast and drink plenty of water, both before and during.

Most of all enjoy it. It is a fantastic participation sport.
Good luck.
