Reason for Punctures ? Empty Reason for Punctures ?

Post by mufynman Mon Jun 23, 2014 7:03 am

After having my 4th puncture in a week , rear tyre , took it off to have a real good look yesterday . No nail/thorns poking through tyre , tubes were new , spokes are tight ,only reason i can think now is that the spoke caps may be rubbing the tube , as they've bitten through the rim tape in places . Would they cause punctures ? If so , is just replacing the rim tape the solution , or do i need to do anything else ?

That looks like damage from ridding with a flat. Bin the existing rim tape and as Wolfy says, one or two laps with duck tape about the same width is the answer. Mine are also duck tape... Very Happy

Definitely the cause. Also make sure all your spokes are tight (mine are always coming loose). They will wear through rim tape / gaffer tape if they can rattle a bit. Also, a good tip against compression punctures is to sand down a whole stick of French chalk and put it inside the tyre.
It will lubricate the tube to stop it being pinched so easily when you hit rocks.
Still, mooses are deffo the way.

I agree with Steve

I've gone a year with out punctures on tubes but I've also punctured twice while out riding, both front and rear, was a long push back to the van. Mousses are worth not going through that hassle alone. Plus you don't have to carry tyre levers, spare tubes, air canisters, leaving more room for sandwiches. win win.

One other thing. I know its obvious, make sure spokes do not pretrude from them nipples!
