Memory map
Anyone got one of these, and is it any good - or is there anything better???
Not been very impressed with some of the phone versions I've seen in action so don't want one of those, but the reviews for this aren't so good either!

Re: Memory map
Ive had that 3500 model , with the 1:50000 map included , for 6-7 months now , and its been great . Ive not used others , but seen them in action and i think i would stick with mine - screen seems better , nice and bright , takes a little bit of learning how to use it , but once you know , you can follow fresh routes on the go , very well defined . loading routes is just drag and drop when connected to pc . Comes with memory map software , and that 1:50000 map is bloomin great for helping marking up routes as it shows all the main byways . Other thing is its waterproof , comes with easy click on/off handlebar mount , rubber cover , plus extras . Only extra I bought was a mini usb 12v charger

This means you can have it running with screen on full backlight all day , with no loss of its battery . The charger has an on/off button , so you can turn it off if you need , so not pemanently on . The battery does last about 7-8 hrs anyway , if you dont have the backlight on all the time .
If you need to know any more - just ask .

Re: Memory map
Can you use the 25K OS maps that are downloadable from the internet. they are a little old but show all byways. The later maps have them all blanked out!
I hope you understand what I mean!!!

Also does the device work at normal speed if you put all the routes from the TRF web site on them. I have all of the routes in Wales in GPX format (one .GPX file).
Works ok on my waterproof Andoid phone using the third party MM tracker.
Touch screen phones don't work that well when it is raining. haha

Re: Memory map
I've had mine for a year now, like mufynman, not had anything else to compare to, so seems fine.
The one thing that takes a bit of getting your head round is it only tracks North, so when heading South following a route you've loaded you have the arrow pointing in the direction your travelling, but the cursur on the screen will be pointing down the screen which is ok but when your trying to ride the bike, look out for obsticles and follow the route not so easy, like patting your head & rubbing your stomach at the same time.
Anyone know if any of the other makes track in the direction your travelling?

Re: Memory map
Thanks for the info gents, have now got one on order
Really want it for use with a 'big trail bike' that I use on B roads and easy trails, as can't keep up with all the necessary map changes when covering more miles!
Suspect i'll stick to 1:2500 maps for the extra detail if/when I get back to doing proper off road stuff
Might be taking you up on the offer of further technical advice though, as i'm a bit of a technophobe with no patriance!!
