Oil leak I think on the DRZ Empty Oil leak I think on the DRZ

Post by cnbevan1979 Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:53 am

Right after the last ride I attended, Steve's rock run, when waiting in the garage for the van I noticed a patch of oil on the floor and collected in the sump guard under the left hand side of the engine.
I checked the oil level and it was low. I have cleaned the bike and removed the sump guard but there is no obvious place where it looks likek it is coming from, still leaking by the way.
I know there are issues with the counter shaft seal, but I have removed the front sproket and checked behind there and all seems fine. The only oil I can see, other than the patch on the floor, has collected on the oil pipe that goes from the underside on the left hand crank case to the top of the engine but the pipe appears top be intact. Anyone got any ideas of where it could be coming from?

Cheers
Chris

You Bevan boyz nothing but trouble! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Never had a Drz but relatively solid bike Ktm Jon-nokiamutt may chime in think they have had a couple...

This is what I would do...wonder if the motor was over filled with oil after a recent service if the bikes dry sump oil level is critical any excess oil will either go into airbox or pass out crank breather pipe.

It is a safety thing rather than blow seals in the engine.

With the sump guard removed put the bike on a solid stand start and run through the gears dont leave it htere mate and go for a pint.

Sounds like oil problem is only visible when under pressure "running" and when oil warmed up.

Gearbox out put shaft seal is common we got some dynamite mechanics here so plenty of guidance...hope this helps £10 on the out shaft seal.

could it just be oil coming off your chain and gathering in your belly pan. Is it definatly engine oil?

Think he has lost some oil, levels are low just a case of running it to make oil more mobile as still cold out and see what happens could be a number of factors Kingee...gearbox seal is known hope its somthing simple Bev...

Quite correct thats why told him to put it on a stangd and run through the gears...if you test ride it its difficult to see where its coming from hopefully small problem be sorted.

Take a good look at the magnesium sidecovers, even with the protective sidecovers they are still prone to spliting , they may have a hairline fracture and leak only when under use ( happened to mine after i fixed the visible damagei found 2 other small cracks that leaked like mad once up to temp), also the main drive for the front sprocket often leaks only when hot and rotating at speed , hope you find it
